Chapter 24: Lights On
We did not make it to the cabin unseen, and I did not care.
Four hundred wolves watched us cross the lawn hand in hand, and somebody whistled.
Pat's voice rose over it, shrieking with joy.
Crispin shut the cabin door behind us and I pulled back the curtain myself.
Daylight poured into the room, bright and white.
It lay across the quilt and the floor and the stove, and across his face when he turned to me.
"Look at you," I said.
"I'm looking."
"You've got three freckles under your left eye."
"I've got what?"
"Come here."
He crossed the room and I took his face in both hands.
I kissed him slowly, standing in the sun, until his hands moved from my waist to the buttons of my dress.
He undid them one at a time.
He drew the green fabric off my shoulders and let it drop, and then he kissed the scar, and my knees went.
"Say it again," he said against my skin.
"I choose you."
"Again."
"I choose you, Crispin. I choose you in the light."
He lifted me onto the bed.
I pulled his shirt over his head, and I watched the sun fall on his chest and the long pale cut of the old rib wounds, and I put my mouth to each one.
He swore under his breath.
I opened his belt and took him in my hand, and he shut his eyes and his hips pushed into my fist.
"Not yet," he said. "Let me."
He knelt between my legs and kissed up the inside of my thigh.
He took his time with his mouth.
I held the iron rail of the bed and told him exactly what I wanted, and he did it until I shook.
