Chapter 6: Leon's Study

I stepped between Crispin and the four wolves on the porch.

"The Luna of Redfern speaks," I said.

They had to listen.

That was the one power the title gave me, and I had never used it.

"This man is a guest of the Ridge, here on a treaty, under the council's eye. The council has set a reading in twelve days. Anyone who touches him before then answers to the council, and to me."

The first wolf's smile slipped.

"The Alpha gave the order."

"Then the Alpha can explain to three council Alphas why a witness vanished the same night I asked for my release."

Nobody moved.

Then the first wolf looked at the others, and they backed off the porch one at a time.

"Dawn is a courtesy," the first one said. "Not an order. We'll tell him so."

"Do."

They went.

Crispin stepped closer behind me.

"You didn't have to do that."

"I know," I said.

I didn't turn around, because if I looked at him I would stay.

I walked back across the grounds to the main house and went straight up the stairs to my husband's study.

The door was open.

Leon sat at his desk with a glass of whiskey and the lamp turned low.

He looked up and flinched.

"Lena."

"Close the door," I said.

He did.

"Your father told you to go to Dinah that night," I said. "He told you someone would see to the claim."

Leon put the glass down.

"I don't know what you mean."
