Chapter 8: Put Her Back
By the second night, Brianna's video had gone around the fan pages twice.
It was a short clip of me at the foot of a bus, in my cracked shirt, with Eli looking down at me.
Her caption said, *This is the girl who's been following the tour. Please be careful, everybody. I'm scared.*
The woman from the plane found me at the barrier with her phone out.
"Is that you?"
"Yes."
"They're calling you a stalker in the comments." She lowered her voice. "I don't believe it, you know. You sang every word last night with your eyes shut."
"Thank you."
"Just keep your head down, okay?"
I tried.
I stood where I had stood before, left side, by the barrier, with my pass on its black cord and my hands in my pockets.
The VIP pit below the stage was full.
Brianna sat on a white velvet stool with a lanyard that said *T.*, signing a fan's arm.
Connor stood behind her, wearing a shirt I had bought him for his birthday.
He did not look at the floor even once.
The show began, and Eli sang the first two songs without a word to the crowd.
He did not look at my corner.
I told myself that was good, and that being unseen was the thing I had asked for.
In the middle of the third song, two men in black jackets came through the crowd on my left.
They did not push.
They walked straight at me, which cleared a path faster than pushing would have.
"Miss," said the taller one. "Come with us."
"What for?"
"The tour manager asked us to remove you."
