Chapter 11: Mrs. Carrow

I did not speak to Anders until my mother was asleep in the main house.

She had a plate of chicken and a view of the garden.

Then I walked to the guest house, and he followed, and I shut the door behind us.

"You let me stand in that hotel lobby," I said, "and get a man to sign a paper saying you weren't my husband."

"I did not say anything false."

"You didn't say anything at all!"

"I did say, 'I married her.'"

"You said it to Tobin! He didn't hear it!"

"You did not hear it either," said Anders. "You were doing sums."

I paced the small length of the room.

"Seven years," I said. "I lived forty feet from your bedroom for seven years. I watched you eat dinner across a table from me, and you never once said stop."

"Stop what?"

"Stop making a fool of yourself with your brother!"

He did not flinch.

"What would I have said?" he asked. "You looked happy. You were laughing at his jokes."

"His jokes are terrible."

"I know. I thought you had low standards."

"I had one standard. It was you."

He went white and then red.

"I thought you loved Tobin," he said. "I watched you wear the colors he liked. I watched you cut your hair for a woman he missed. You let me believe it, Leonie. For seven years, you let me stand in my own mother's dining room and think I had lost."

"I was waiting for you to notice!"

"I was waiting for you to be unhappy," he said, and his voice cracked. "So I could say something decent."

We stood looking at each other across the little room.

I had a whole speech, and I did not have one word of it left.
