Chapter 14: Fremont Street
The wedding chapel on Fremont Street never closed, and at one in the morning it glowed pink and gold under the canopy of lights.
Dario had a pawn shop open for us before we parked.
He came out with four plain gold bands in a paper bag and a thin chain in his fist.
"Cash," he said, before anyone asked. "From my own pocket. Nobody's seal on it."
"Dario, what is this?" I asked.
"A family meeting," he said. "In this family we hold them in a chapel."
My heel had snapped in the Meridian garage, and I limped across the sidewalk with one shoe in my hand.
Luca stopped me at the chapel's step.
He crouched in front of me without a word, took my bare foot in both his hands, and held it against his thigh.
It was a small thing.
His thumb pressed into the arch, slowly, and a hot line ran from my sole to the base of my spine.
I looked at the top of his shaved head.
His pulse was beating hard in the wrist that held my ankle, and I told myself that he was winded from the walk.
