The steakhouse at the Meridian had white tablecloths, low candles, and a man waiting for me at the corner table by the window.
He stood when I came in.
He was soft-faced and neat, in a gray suit that fit him better than it had on Sunday, and he held my chair himself.
"Ms. Prestia," said the Chicago partner's son. "Thank you for coming."
"I almost didn't."
"I know." He sat. "I almost didn't either."
Aldo had arranged the dinner through his friend in Chicago, a "chance for the young people to get acquainted."
Marco had read the text out loud in his office on the fortieth floor, and then he had said, "Go."
I had stared at him.
"I want you to hear what he says," Marco said. "Before you decide anything about him."
"I have decided."
"Then hear it anyway."
