Chapter 24: The Packs
For eight days Blackstone was a cage with banners on it.
Varrick's guards walked the walls day and night.
They searched the women's tower twice more. They turned out the laundry, the kitchens and the chapel crypt.
Clarice walked behind them with her list and didn't look at me once.
That frightened me more than if she had.
Twice a day Lysander climbed the west tower with a basket of clean bandages for the King's sickroom.
Under the bandages was a flask of black purge.
"He calls me a poisoner every morning," Lysander reported. "Then he drinks it. Then he calls me worse."
"That means he's better," I said.
"That's what I told myself."
On the ninth morning the Moon Council rode up the cliff road.
The portcullis went up for them and nobody else.
The whole school lined the yard again.
They came in pairs and threes, the lords of the great packs, with their banners and their riders behind them.
Then the river pack came through the gate in Ingleby blue.
