My mother came to therapy in a cream suit and heels.
She sat on the couch between Wade and me with her handbag on her knees.
The leather squeaked as she crossed her ankles.
Wade stared at the plant.
I stared at the carpet.
We were both two feet from her, and an hour ago we had been in the shower together.
"Colette," Julian said warmly. "Thank you for coming."
"Of course. I want to be part of the process."
"You've noticed progress at home?"
"Tremendous," my mother said. "They don't shout anymore. They barely speak, but they don't shout."
"That's often the first stage."
She smiled at him.
It was a small, practiced smile, the one she used on buyers who were about to sign.
Julian smiled back, and for a second something passed across the room between them that I couldn't read.
It was quick.
It was familiar.
