Chapter 16: Mother and Daughter
My mother was waiting in the kitchen on Friday morning with a manila envelope and a cup of tea.
She had dressed for it.
A grey silk blouse, pearl studs, her hair smooth as glass, and every line of her face arranged to look sad.
"Sit down, Mallory," she said.
I sat.
She slid the envelope across the marble.
I opened it.
Inside were eight glossy photographs.
Each one was a still from the office, and each one showed my body under Wade's hands, or Julian's, or both.
My face was clear in every frame.
I laid them out in a row, calmly, and looked at each one.
"I'm so disappointed," my mother said.
"I can tell."
"I never wanted you to find out like this."
"Find out what?"
"That your stepfather is a predator." She pressed a tissue to the corner of her eye. "That the doctor I trusted is a pervert. That my own daughter."
