Chapter 18: The Dinner
My mother's dining room held twelve people and one very long table.
I wore the blue dress.
Wade wore a charcoal suit and sat at my right.
His hand rested on the back of my chair.
The candles were lit.
The wine was poured.
Across from us sat Graham Pell in a navy blazer, smiling at the room, and at the head of the table my mother glowed in white silk.
Next to her sat a grey-haired woman with reading glasses on a chain.
The Dean of Students.
I had never met her.
She looked at me kindly and then at my mother, and she did not yet know why she was there.
"Friends," my mother said, tapping her glass. "Thank you for coming. I have something difficult to share, and I wanted to share it among people I trust."
The table went quiet.
"My husband and my daughter," she said, "have been engaged in an affair."
A woman gasped.
Wade's business partner set down his fork.
"It was facilitated by a therapist we trusted," my mother went on, with a tremor she had practiced. "A man who exploited their vulnerability. I have evidence. I'm sorry that you have to see it."
She nodded to her lawyer.
The lawyer rose and pressed a remote.
The big screen over the sideboard lit up.
