Chapter 4: Kneel

I wore the blue dress on Tuesday, and I wore nothing under it.

I felt every step across the parking lot, every stir of air on skin that wasn't used to being bare.

Wade walked next to me with his hands shoved in his pockets and his eyes straight ahead.

He had not touched me since the kitchen.

My mother had been home every night.

The house had become a place where we passed each other in the hall like strangers.

I had lain awake with my hand between my legs, thinking about his mouth.

Dr. Thorsby's receptionist waved us through, and he was waiting in the armchair with the lamps low.

He looked at me once, head to toe.

"Did you follow the prescription?"

"Yes."

"Show me."

My face burned.

"Stand," he said. "Lift your hem."

I stood in the middle of the beige room and took the blue fabric in both hands.

I pulled it up until the cool air hit my thighs and the bare strip between them.

Wade made a low sound behind me.

"Good girl," Dr. Thorsby said.

Something in me went liquid at that.

I had never been called it by someone who meant it this way.

"Let it fall," he said. "Sit."

I sat on the couch, and Wade sat beside me, not touching.

"Last week we learned that you can be touched," Dr. Thorsby said.

"This week we learn that you can give. Wade, stand up."

Wade stood.

"Face the couch. Unbuckle your belt."

"Julian."

"You've had your hands on her. Now she touches you. It's an equal exchange."

The ghost of a smile touched his mouth.

"Unless you'd like to go home and keep not looking at each other."

Wade stared at him.

I looked up at my stepfather, big against the lamp.

The front of his jeans already strained.

"Wade," I said.

I wasn't asking for permission.

I was asking for him.

He undid the belt.

The metal clinked, and the sound rang in the quiet room.

He opened his jeans, and I watched him push them down with his boxer briefs.

Then he was standing there, hard and heavy and flushed, and my mouth went dry.
