Chapter 4: Her Terms

I did not answer Brynn.

I put my pen down and looked at the five people on the other side of my table.

"Here is how this works," I said. "Rodrick, take notes."

"Taking notes," Rodrick said, and he opened his laptop.

Ward unfolded his hands.

"Before you say anything," he said, "the pack is prepared to make this worth your while. Two million for the summit, paid in advance, and a seat on the council."

"A seat on the council," I said.

"A courtesy seat."

"Ward, last night your council had a seat for me too. It was in a flat on Elm Street."

The thin elder looked at the table.

"Two million is the offer," Ward said. "It's more than generous."

"It's the price of the summit, which I set at four. You'd have paid it in the contract if you'd read the contract."

"We'll pay four," the heavy elder said at once.

"No, you won't," I said. "That's not what I want."

Ward's eyes narrowed a little.

"What do you want?"

"Three things."

I held up one finger.

"First, the council retracts the word wolfless. Not in a private letter. On the same stream you used to say it, with four hundred witnesses, by the same man who said it."

Ward's mouth thinned.

"That's Ward Standish," I said, in case anyone had forgotten.

"A pack elder does not apologize to a girl who..."

"Then the summit doesn't happen," I said, "and Northfang crosses your border before the next full moon."
