They Arranged My Marriage, So I Arranged My Terms novel · Chapter 1 of 3
Chapter 1: The Photograph Between Us
Valentina attends the engagement dinner, pockets the photograph Dante slides her showing Bruno with a rival kingpin, and watches Bruno fail to dismiss the evidence without exposing his fear.
Valentina set her father's fountain pen beside her wineglass, the nib uninked, the gold clip worn smooth from a thumb that would never press it again.
She had not touched the wine.
Across the table, Dante Marchetti watched her the way he watched everyone, a beat too long, like he was reading a ledger behind her eyes.
'You invited the elders,' she said. 'This dinner was meant to concern only the two of us.'
Dante did not look away. 'You came armed.'
Her hand was still on the knife.
She had not been aware of gripping it until he spoke, and she did not let go now. The weight of the blade was the only honest thing in the room.
Bruno Fera laughed from three chairs down, warm and easy, the sound of a man who had never once been afraid at a dinner table.
'Ah, Valentina, you have your father's fire.' He touched the arm of the elder beside him, a light, familiar pat. 'It's a shame it's aimed at the wrong people.'
She did not answer him.
She had learned years ago that Bruno's kindness was a door that only opened one way.
'Your father made his wishes clear before he passed,' Cosimo Abbate said. He sat at the far end, his hands folded on the table, his voice carrying the patient weight of a man repeating himself. 'Marrying the Marchetti boy is what he would have wanted. Do not make this harder than it needs to be.'
Val turned the knife over in her palm, once.
She was not going to marry anyone.
But she was not going to say that here, with all of them watching, waiting for her to be the girl they had always handled.
'You think I came here to be a peace offering?' she asked quietly. 'I came here to see who's holding the knife.'
Dante's mouth moved, the smallest shift, and it was not a smile.
It was recognition.
He reached into his coat and set a single photograph on the table between them, face up.
The room went still.
Val looked at it.
She did not gasp. She did not flinch. She made herself look at the photograph the way she would look at a column of figures, line by line, until every number had been accounted for.
Bruno Fera, in a parking garage, shaking hands with a man she knew from her father's files. A rival kingpin. The man's face was half in shadow, but the overcoat was unmistakable, the signet ring catching the light.
And the timestamp in the corner.
The night before her father died.
'Valentina,' Dante said, and his voice was low, meant only for her, though the whole table had gone silent enough to hear a breath. 'Would you like to stop performing and start winning?'
She did not look up.
She was memorizing the photograph.
The way Bruno's hand was turned, the angle of his shoulders, the car behind them, the plate number half-visible, the exact fold of the coat over his arm.
Her father's death had been treated at the funeral as a natural loss.
Now it read as a timed removal.
'This is absurd,' Bruno said.
His voice had lost its warmth.
It was still even, still reasonable, but the laugh was gone, and that was the first real thing she had heard from him in months.
'Where did you get this?' Cosimo demanded.
Val looked up then, and she let her face go slack, let her eyes go wide, let the shock they were all waiting to see settle over her like a coat she had chosen to wear.
'Bruno?' she said.
She made her voice small.
She made herself the daughter who had just been shown the impossible, the girl who needed the men in the room to explain it to her, and she watched Bruno's fingers twitch on the tablecloth.
'This is a fabrication,' Bruno said. He was looking at Dante now, not at her. 'The night before your father passed, I was at home with my wife. She will tell you.'
Dante said nothing.
He simply sat there, claiming space, letting the silence do the talking.
'Anyone can make a photograph,' Bruno went on, and the warmth was creeping back into his voice now, the easy, folksy cadence. 'These things, they can be doctored. You know this, Valentina. You are too smart to be taken in by a man whose family has wanted our territory for a generation.'
Val did not answer.
She reached across the table and picked up the photograph.
Her fingers were steady.
She studied it once more, the way she had seen her father study a contract before he signed anything, and then she folded it, once, and slipped it into the inside pocket of her tailored charcoal coat.
'Valentina,' Cosimo said, and there was warning in his voice now. 'What are you doing?'
She picked up her wineglass at last and took a sip.
The wine was good.
She had expected nothing less.
'I'm keeping it,' she said simply. 'Unless you'd like to explain to the room why the sight of it has made you so unhappy, Bruno.'
Bruno's hand moved toward her, across the table, as if he meant to take it back.
'That photograph is not yours,' he said.
'The original is not the only copy,' Dante said.
Bruno's hand stopped.
It hung there, over the white tablecloth, the fingers half-curled, the warm, open face gone still in the candlelight.
And for the first time all evening, Bruno Fera looked afraid.
