Chapter 15: Pittsburgh
Rocco's POV
She stood at the counter in my old T-shirt with the phone in her hand, and I watched her work out what Thurston had said.
"What's in Pittsburgh?" Livia asked.
"Get dressed. I'll show you."
"I'm not going to Pittsburgh at one in the morning."
"No," I said. "It's here."
I zipped my trousers and went upstairs with my arm throbbing.
The steel box was on the shelf of my closet, behind the winter coats.
It had been there four years and two houses. I had never once let a man carry it.
I set it on the kitchen table when I came back down, and she had pulled on her sweatshirt and a pair of my socks.
She looked at the box, and she looked at me.
"Open it," I said.
She lifted the lid.
The letters were in two stacks, tied with kitchen string, the edges soft from handling.
Her name was on every envelope. The address was a post office box in Pittsburgh.
One stack was in her father's square, heavy hand. The other stack was mine.
"I wrote to you every month," I said. "He did too. You never read a word."
"I stopped checking the box."
"I know. After three months, the post office starts sending unclaimed mail back to whoever wrote it."
I watched her understand.
"The return address was the club," I said.
"Silvio's people sort the club's mail."
"They'd have known where you were in a week. So I drove to Pittsburgh on the first Saturday of every month, four hours each way, and emptied the box."
She put her hand over her mouth.
