Chapter 16: The Yes
I woke with his mouth on my shoulder and his hand already moving slowly between my legs.
The cabin was full of white light.
The snow had stopped in the night, and the sun came through the one small window and lay across the cot.
"Yes," I said, before he could ask me anything.
He lifted his head.
"I didn't say a word."
"You were going to. The answer's yes." I turned onto my back and looked at him. "Whatever it is. I'm saying it first."
His eyes were wet, and he smiled.
It was the first time I had seen it all the way, and it changed his whole face.
"Then I'll earn it," he said.
"You'll have it. Nobody's making you earn it."
I pulled my mother's quilt off the cot and spread it on the rag rug in front of the stove, where the sun came down in a long gold square.
I lay back on it, naked, in the light.
"Come here."
He knelt at the edge of the quilt.
His hair was wild from sleep, and a pink line from the doorframe ran across his shoulder where I had dug in my nails.
He looked at me for a long time.
"Take your time," I said. "I want to be looked at."
"I could do this all day."
"Then do it."
He began at my feet.
He took my left foot in his hands and kissed the arch, and the ankle, and the inside of my knee.
He kissed his way up my thigh with his eyes on my face, and the stubble on his jaw dragged on my skin.
The stove ticked, and I spread my legs a little wider.
He put his mouth on me.
He was slow about it. He licked me in long, flat, patient strokes and let me feel every one.
His tongue circled my clit, and then closed over it and sucked, gently.
