Chapter 19: The Night Before

Duncan's POV

She had told me what I was to do at Old Christmas, and it was nothing.

"You stand behind my chair," Dovie said. "You don't say a word. Not to him, not to the pack, not to anyone."

"If he lays a hand on you..."

"Then I'll deal with his hand. It's my mother, Duncan. It's mine to say."

I had said I would.

Now it was the night before, and I stood in the study at eleven o'clock with the fire burning down and could not sit.

I am an Alpha. I have never in my life been told to say nothing.

I wanted to drive down the mountain and break every bone in Loyal Gragg's body.

I wanted it so badly that my hands ached.

The door opened behind me.

Dovie came in, in her flannel nightgown with her braid over one shoulder.

She shut the door and turned the key.

"I thought so," she said. "You're wearing a groove in the rug."

"I'm sorry."

"Don't be. Sit."

She pointed at the leather chair by the fire, and I sat.

I have obeyed very few people.

She crossed the room, and hitched the nightgown up around her thighs, and sat down across my lap with her knees on either side of me.

Her weight settled on me, warm and soft and entirely certain.
