Chapter 21: Half the Rent

Dylan's POV

I had two offers on the kitchen table, and I hated both of them.

The first was from the fire department in Redding, five hours north.

It was a paramedic post at a rural station, one year, good pay, a house on the grounds.

The second was a night shift with the private ambulance company in Santa Cruz.

It paid thirty percent less, and it was the kind of job I had done at nineteen to get through school.

Hanne sat across from me with her chin on her fist.

She had been home from Duluth for three days, and she looked like herself again, a little stronger around the eyes.

The lamp was on in her room down the hall.

"You've been staring at those for an hour," she said.

"I'm being thorough."

"You're being stuck."

"That too."

She pulled the Redding letter across the table and read it twice.

"This one is better," she said. "It's more money. It's the work you like."

"It's five hours from you."

"I know where Redding is."

"I'd drive down every other weekend."

"You'd be tired every other weekend."

"I'd do it."

"I know you would." She set the letter down. "Which is why I'm not going to let you pick the other one."

I blinked at her.

"I'm not picking the other one," I said. "I'm picking the one where I don't have to leave you after two months of knowing you."

"Dylan."

"I mean it."

"That's exactly what I'm saying no to." She put both hands flat on the table. "I'm not going to be the thing you gave up. I have spent twenty years being somebody's reason for a sacrifice, and it was always a bill. I don't want to be that for you."
