Chapter 15: The Corridor
Quentin stepped between me and the police before I could answer.
He did it without hurry, with his hands open at his sides, and the older officer stopped on the bottom step.
"Gentlemen," Quentin said. "I'm Quentin Wexley. The Foundation that filed this complaint is mine to answer for."
"You are the complainant?" the translator asked.
"I am not. My mother's lawyers filed it without my signature."
The officer opened his folder and spoke in German. The translator listened and turned to me.
"New York has issued a summons for Frau Brunner, and an order that the child be brought before the court."
"Brought," I said. "Like a package."
"The order says the child may have been removed unlawfully."
"He was removed from nothing. I'm his mother."
"Frau Brunner, we are not here to arrest you." The translator said it kindly. "We are here to deliver the papers."
"And then?"
"In forty-eight hours you must tell us whether you will go. If you will not, the theft charge can go to the courts here, and a Swiss judge may hold your passport."
My son was on the third floor of this building, holding a brass wheel.
I did not trust my voice, so I took the folder.
The officers touched their caps to me and left.
Quentin turned around. He was grey in the face.
"She did that to you," he said. "While I was sitting on your sofa."
"She offered me a deal first."
"What deal?"
I told him. I told it flat and quick, standing on the pavement with the folder pressed against my chest.
