Megan's POV
I slept four hours in the on-call room on the surgical floor, in my clothes, with my shoes on.
At seven a knock came, and a driver in a gray jacket stood in the corridor with two suitcases and a garment bag.
"Mr. Corliss said to bring everything," he said. "And this."
It was a plain white envelope.
Inside was a sheet of the company's paper with six lines in black ink, in a hand that pressed too hard.
I'm not asking where you are. I'm not asking when. Keep the badge. Gran says to eat something that isn't a granola bar. I spoke to my father. I'll tell you when you want to hear it.
Nothing else.
No signature.
I read it twice, and then I put the note in my pocket, over my heart, which I was ashamed of.
The hospital gave me a corporate apartment on the sixth floor of a building across the street.
It had a white couch and a view of the parking deck.
I looked at the deck for a long time.
