Chapter 17: Her Terms
Rafe had moved out of the Fox Chapel house the day after OR 4.
He lived now in a loft over a bakery in the Strip District.
It was a long brick room with high windows, one bed, a couch and a kitchen he had not yet learned to use.
I climbed the stairs at ten at night, after the cemetery, and knocked.
He opened the door in jeans and a gray T-shirt with flour on the sleeve.
"The baker downstairs gave me a loaf," he said. "I don't know what to do with it."
"Eat it."
"I tried. It's very hard," he said.
"It's sourdough. You're supposed to cut it."
"Megan." He stopped. His eyes went over my face. "Did something happen?"
"Yes," I said. "I decided something."
I stepped in and shut the door behind me.
"I have terms," I said.
His mouth moved. "You always have terms."
"One. You don't thank me for anything. Not for being here, not for being kind, not for coming."
"Understood," he said.
"Two. You don't apologize for your father in my bed. Every time you want to, you say nothing and put your mouth somewhere useful."
