Chapter 9: Rain

He did not touch me in the car.

I'd said I would, and I had no right to anything after the roof, and we both knew it.

We rode home in the back of the Mercedes with a foot of leather between us and the driver's eyes on the road.

Rain started at the Fox Chapel gate.

By the time we reached the house it came sideways in sheets, and the whole drive lay in the dark.

"Power's out," the housekeeper said in the hall, with a flashlight. "Mrs. Corliss has gone to bed. Gran has a candle."

I climbed the stairs to my room with a candle of my own.

I sat on the bed in the dark and did not take off my shoes.

I could hear the storm on the roof.

I could hear him somewhere beyond the wall, moving.

A knock came at the door that joined our rooms, a door we had agreed to keep shut.

Three slow raps.

I opened it.

He stood there in his shirt with the sleeves rolled and a single candle, and the flame lit his face from below.

"Term two," he said.

"It's your problem."

"I'm breaking it," he said.

"You'll have to tell me why."

"Because I haven't been able to think of anything else since you said the word 'knees' in front of a woman holding her dead son's picture." His voice was rough. "And because I'd like to know what you do when you're not telling me what you'd do."

I took the candle out of his hand and put it on the dresser.

Then I took the front of his shirt in both hands and pulled him in.

He kissed me hard and very slow.

His mouth was warm and tasted of whiskey and rain.

I pulled his shirt open and felt the buttons go.

"Megan," he said against my jaw.

"Don't talk."

"I want to," he said.

"Later."

He backed me against the wall by the door, his hands under my cardigan, flat against my ribs, thumbs under the edge of my bra.
