Chapter 19: One at a Time

They came to my gravel one at a time, and the first was the woman with her hand on her ribs.

It was the morning after the bank.

I was in the shed with a lower unit in pieces on the table and a mug going cold at my elbow.

Remy sat across from me, holding a wrench with an air of deep suspicion.

He had slept in my spare room on the cot, with his boots on the floor and his feet hanging off the end.

I had listened to him breathe through the wall until two.

The woman stopped in the bay door.

She was in a church dress, a blue one, and she held her purse in front of her in both hands.

"Miss Odalie," she said.

"Good morning," I said.

"I've come to say sorry."

"For what?"

"For telling the Luna where you were," she said.

"I know you did."

"I didn't want to," she said.

Her voice shook.

"She came to my house on Sunday with a priest, and she said my son would lose his place.

"He's twenty-two.

"He's the one with the cough."

"I know who he is," I said.

"I said I'd tell her.

"I said it to save him."

"Sit down," I said.

She sat on the bucket.

She put her purse on her knees and looked at her hands.

"I've been in the pack all my life," she said.
