Chapter 24: The Wolf They Buried

We set my mother's stone on the Broussard bank on a clear morning at the end of March.

The sun was well up and the water lay flat and gold.

It was gray granite from a yard in Breaux Bridge, and Remy had paid for it out of his own pay.

He had not let me see the lettering until it was in the ground.

It gave her name and the years of her life, and under them a line in French that Anselme had chosen.

She pushed her daughter into the boat.

I stood in front of it in my good dress with my son's hand in mine.

The cane across the water leaned toward us.

Nobody had been invited.

Half the pack stood back along the shell road anyway, hats in their hands, not coming closer.

Anselme had come in a car the pack had lent him, with the oilcloth book in his lap.

He sat on the running board and watched.

I read the stone twice.

"It's right," I said.

"I wasn't sure about the line," Remy said.

"It's right.

"She'd have hated the fuss."

"She'd have let it happen."

"She would," I said.

I knelt and laid my palm flat on the granite.

It was warm from the sun, and under it I felt the mound and the roots and the silent dark.

"I told you I'd come back," I said.

"I came back."

I stood up and turned to Remy and held out my hand.

He took it.

"I'm going to say it now," I said.

"Say what?" Bastien said.

"Grown-up things."

"Boring ones?"

"Very boring," I said.

"Go stand with Mr. Anselme."

He went, with the dog, looking back twice.

I looked up at the man in front of me.

He wore a clean white shirt with the sleeves rolled up and his hair combed flat.

He had not slept, and I could see it.

"Remy Thibodeaux," I said.

"I was eighteen when I looked at you across a crowd and trusted you to say my name.

"You didn't.

"I've been angry about that for eight years.

"I'm not angry now."

His throat moved.

"You came across my gravel and said you'd come to claim what was yours.

"You didn't claim anything.

"You put a flag in your mother's hands and walked over a line and got down on your knees on a wet road.

"You did every single thing I asked you.

"You never took one step I didn't say you could.
