Chapter 9: The Wine

Clemence came to the shed in daylight the next morning, alone, carrying a paper sack.

I had not slept.

I had sat on my kitchen floor until two with my back against the cabinet and a wrench across my knees, listening to Remy breathe on the porch step outside the door.

He had not left.

He had stayed in his truck at the end of the lane until dawn, and then walked up and asked if I wanted coffee.

I had said no, and then yes.

He was at the shed table now with the cup when we heard the gravel.

She walked up the lane the way she'd walked up it in the dark, with that careful balanced stride.

In daylight I could see all of her.

She was twenty-seven.

She had been the prettiest girl in the pack, and the strongest, and the one who laughed loudest at the Fourth of July boil.

Her hair was cut to her jaw now, glossy and black, and her face had gone thin and hard.

Her left sleeve hung empty from the shoulder, pinned with a gold pin.

She stopped at the edge of the gravel, and I saw her look at Remy.

Her eyes went to him the way they always had.

"Cousin," she said.

"Clemence."

"I've come to see the woman who took my arm."

I put my wrench down on the bench.

I walked out of the bay into the sunlight and stood on my gravel with my arms loose at my sides.

My heart was going, and I made my voice flat.
