Chapter 11: What He Told Me

His grandmother handed me a tissue before I knew I needed it.

"You followed him," she said.

"Yes."

"And he's had a reversal."

I stared at her.

"How do you know that?"

"Imogen can't keep a secret for love or money," she said. "She's been walking around my room for ten days with her mouth shut so tight it squeaks."

"Then you know." My voice shook. "You know he did it four days after we married. You know it's for someone else."

"There is nobody else."

"How can you say that?"

"Because I've known him thirty-eight years." She tapped the bed beside her. "Come here. Sit. I'll tell you about his father, and then you can shout at me."

I sat.

"His father was a man who needed everyone in the room to be afraid of him," she said. "My daughter married him at twenty-three. I'll carry that until I die."

"Elias told me about the ring."

Her eyebrows went up.

"Did he? He told you?" She pressed her lips together. "Then he trusts you more than I knew."

"Is that why he had the surgery?"

"At twenty-nine he had a girlfriend who was three days late." The old voice was dry. "He came to my house at two in the morning, shaking so hard I had to put a blanket on him. He said, 'Nana, I looked in the mirror and I saw his hands.'"

My throat tightened.

"The girl was not pregnant. But my grandson went and found a surgeon that same week."

"Because he thought he'd be like him."

"Because he was twenty-nine and terrified and he'd never had anyone tell him he wasn't," she said. "He's spent nine years behaving like a punishment he handed himself."
