Chapter 16: Cordelia's Move
Cordelia Stockbridge arrived at the hospital suite at two o'clock the next afternoon, carrying an armful of white calla lilies.
I knew the time, because I was sitting beside the grandmother's bed with my hand under her palm when the door opened.
"Madam," Cordelia said warmly, to the bed. "Forgive me. I was never told your name."
"No," the grandmother said. "You weren't."
Elias stood up from the window.
Imogen, in the corner chair, took off her reading glasses and put them in her lap.
That was how I knew she was about to enjoy herself.
Cordelia set the lilies on the foot of the bed.
Her silver bob was perfect, and her pearls lay in their long white rope, and she was smiling the smile that stayed put.
"I brought flowers to a woman who is ill," she said. "I would think that was permitted."
"Calla lilies," the grandmother said. "They are for funerals."
"They are for elegance."
"They are for funerals, and they stink."
Cordelia's smile did not move.
She turned to me, and her eyes went down once, to my waist, and came up again.
"Leona, darling. You look well."
"Thank you."
"You look radiant. I always said marriage would suit you." She laid a cream-colored envelope on the bed tray. "This is why I came."
Elias took it before I could.
He read the card and handed it to me without a word.
The Stockbridge Foundation requests the honor of your company at its Twentieth Anniversary Gala, Saturday, January sixteenth, in the Lakeshore Ballroom. Mrs. Elias Hartwell will be recognized for her service to the community.
