Chapter 11: An Invitation

"No," I said.

I held the prepaid phone against my chest with both hands.

Lorraine kept her palm out, and I kept my thumb over the screen, and a nurse walked between us with a clipboard and did not look up.

"A recording of a frightened man in a hospital hallway," Lorraine said softly. "Think about how that will sound, Margaret."

"I'll let people hear how it sounds."

"You have nothing. A phone and a grudge."

"I have your son saying you picked me."

Neil made a small noise.

Lorraine's eyes went to him for the first time, and he flinched.

Then her hand came down.

She looked at me for a long moment, and when she spoke again her voice was warm.

"Very well. I won't ask you to erase anything."

"Good."

"Come to the open house on New Year's Day. Rowan Tile, ten o'clock, the whole town will be there. Say everything you want to say, in front of everyone." She smiled. "I'll answer every word. I'd rather it were done in the open than whispered in a pharmacy."

"She wants me where she can see me," I said to Callum on the drive back.

"She wants you where she has a room full of people who love her."

"I know."

"Then you know what it is."

"It's a trap," I said. "And I'm going."

"Maggie."

"I'm going, Callum. I'm done being the one nobody expects."
