Chapter 8: The Notary
"I'm not hiding it to protect her," Callum said.
He was still standing by my back door with his hand on the frame.
"Then say it."
"It's a paper in my father's desk at the shop. I saw it once, five years ago, and I took a photo, and I deleted the photo the next day because I was a coward." He rubbed his beard. "The desk is locked, and Neil has the key. I need a few days."
"A few days."
"Maggie, if I tell you something I can't back up, she'll say I'm bitter and you'll be the woman who believed the brother who left."
He had a point, and I hated that too.
"Three days," I said. "Then you tell me, paper or no paper."
He nodded and went out the front way and pulled the door closed with a click.
I stood in my kitchen and looked at the cold casserole in my refrigerator.
I threw the whole dish in the trash, glass and all.
The next morning, Bev made me put on lipstick.
"We're going to the pharmacy," she said. "It's the twenty-seventh. Everyone in Dunmore is in line for the same cough syrup."
"I don't have a cough."
"No, but she does."
She did.
The notary was ahead of us at the counter in a quilted vest with a bottle of cold medicine in her hand.
She was a church woman of sixty with a little gold cross, who had stamped half the paperwork in Dunmore for thirty years and brought lemon squares to every funeral.
She had once held my hand at my grandmother's.
I walked up behind her.
"Good morning," I said, loud enough for the line.
She turned and her whole face changed.
