Chapter 14: What Odette Knew

Vesper's POV

The cell on Level Nine had a bench, a drain and a light that never went off.

I had been in it for three days, and I had not asked anyone a single question.

I sat with my back to the wall and held my own left wrist in my right hand.

It did nothing.

It was only a wrist.

A guard stood outside the bars with a recorder clipped to his belt, and the little green light on it had been on since they brought me in.

On the third night the lock buzzed, and the guard stepped aside.

Odette came in.

She wore grey, plain grey, with her hair down and no pearls.

The thin gold chain was still at her throat.

"You have ten minutes," the guard said, and stayed where he was.

Odette sat down on the far end of the bench, as far from me as the cell allowed.

"Caspian has nothing left to lose," she said. "Maltravers's people are already asking me what I know about him."

My chest hurt.

"Where is he?"

"On the Station, in a rented room, with forty people sleeping on his floor." Her mouth twisted. "He's called as the witness against you. He's going to swear to the override. It's the only way to prove you didn't suppress anything, and it ends him."

"I know."

"Do you?"

"Yes," I said. "Why are you here, Odette?"

She laughed, and it came out wrong.

"I'm not here to be nice," she said. "I was nice all morning, on the day, and look what it was worth."

"You were."

"I was terrified all morning." She reached up and unhooked the gold chain.

She held it in her palm.

"The Admiral gave me this the week before the Hall. It reads my signal, and it tells him where I am." She set it on the bench between us. "I have worn it every day since."
