Chapter 11: The Dock
The last boat to Nantucket had left at eight.
Isaac drove us to Hyannis through the dark while I held my phone in my lap and watched it not ring.
At ten, Harriet called.
"I've signed an order for the immediate return of the children," she said. "The Nantucket police have it. They'll meet the first boat."
"Thank you, Harriet."
"Don't thank me. Just don't touch Elaine Lindell, no matter what she says to you."
"I won't."
"I mean it, Lillian. Don't give her anything."
We slept two hours in the car in the ferry lot.
Or Isaac slept.
I watched the harbor lights and counted the boys' ages over and over.
Five. Three. Fourteen months.
The first fast ferry left at six.
By eight we were walking up Main Street on the island with two police officers.
One of them was young and kind and kept saying he was sorry.
The Lindell house was on the water past the yacht club.
