Chapter 22: Ask Me Again
Cadence's POV
The King raised one hand, and the gray people closed around Alden and Lorna and led them gently back down the hall.
The hall went quiet.
I stood alone in front of Ewan with nothing in my hands.
He looked the way he had on a good day, tired and clean-shaven, in the sweater with the frayed cuff.
The wrist he had hidden for three weeks hung whole at his side.
"You paid a year," he said.
"Fifty-five left. I can spare it."
"That's not funny."
"No." I swallowed. "I didn't come to be funny."
We looked at each other.
I had planned a hundred things to say, in the car, in the kitchen, on the fire escape.
Every one of them was gone.
"I thought you were the strong one," I said.
He didn't answer.
"For five years I thought it. I thought you were the person I could ask anything of, and you would say it was fine, and it would be fine. So when Pierce came to me and said it was a mission, and it would only be an act, and it would save his life, I thought, Ewan won't mind. Ewan never minds."
"I minded."
"You said it was not an act for you. I patted your shoulder."
"I remember."
"You went white and quiet. I told myself you were being sensitive." My voice broke. "Last week you told me, in the fight, that it was real, that your brother had a voice and a deadline and so did you. I said it was a story you were telling to feel important."
"I didn't tell you well," he said quietly. "I said it the way I said everything. Like it was nothing. I was tired of being called dramatic."
"I should have asked you twice."
"You should have."
"I'm so sorry."
"I know."
I wiped my face with the back of my hand.
