Chapter 7: Time of Death

The ambulance came, and then a county examiner and a young police officer.

They shut my bedroom door behind them.

Everyone else sat in the living room under the wedding balloons nobody had taken down.

My mother sat on the couch with my gray scarf in her lap.

I had left it on the hall table, and she had picked it up without knowing she did.

My father stood at the window with his back to the room.

Pierce sat in the armchair with a bag of frozen peas on his forehead.

Cadence sat on the floor against the wall, still in her wedding gown.

She had not taken the veil off.

I stood in the middle of them and waited.

Ada leaned against the doorway with her arms folded.

"They'll say it fast," she said. "They always do."

The examiner came out of my room after a while with a clipboard.

He was a tired man with gray in his mustache, and he spoke in a quiet voice that carried across the whole room.

"Mr. and Mrs. Fairbank. I'm very sorry."

My mother did not look up.

"Your son wore a fitness watch. It was still on his left wrist and still logging. His heart stopped at 9:46 p.m. yesterday."

My mother's head came up slowly.

"Yesterday," she said.

"Yes, ma'am. The body temperature and the other findings agree with it. He died about twenty hours before we arrived."

"That's not possible," my mother said.

"Ma'am."

"Pierce said Ewan opened the door and hit him with a cake. Today. This afternoon."

The examiner glanced at Pierce, who lowered the peas.

"It couldn't have been today," the examiner said. "He couldn't have opened a door. He couldn't have moved at all. The injury to his side was untreated and had bled into the abdomen. He would not have been able to stand for some time before the end."
