Chapter 11: The Wrong Rescue

I arrived at Sadie's apartment with flowers and a terrible idea.

The flowers were so large that I rang her neighbor's bell first.

Sadie opened her own door and watched me reverse along the landing.

"Are you moving a hedge?" she asked.

I lowered the arrangement enough to find her face.

"They're for you," I said.

"I can see that they have ambitions."

She let me in and cleared a space on her table.

I put the flowers down and found Miles already sitting by the window.

He held a screwdriver beside a little broken lamp.

Sadie saw me looking.

"He came to fix that," she explained.

"Not to supervise your shrub."

I had asked him to meet us for lunch, then arrived early with the flowers.

My attempt at a private grand gesture now had an audience.

I took the printed offer out of my bag.

A producer I knew had a comedy special looking for new material.

I'd suggested Sadie and offered to introduce it on camera.

The producer had sent an enthusiastic outline.

Sadie read the first page while I stood beside the enormous arrangement.

She lowered it slowly.

"This calls me your discovery," she said.

"That can be changed," I replied.

She turned another page.

"This calls you my inspiration."

Miles tightened a screw with unnecessary concentration.

I took the paper back and found a third description.
