The host's dressing room contained three white blouses and one reassuring plant.
I had arrived in blue.
Wesley looked at my dress, then at the blouses.
"We have options," he said.
"I'm wearing mine," I answered.
A makeup artist checked my face and asked whether I felt comfortable.
Before I could answer, Wesley said yes.
The woman looked directly at me and waited.
"Nervous," I told her.
"That's allowed," she said, and moved the blouses out of my way.
Miles stood in the doorway holding my bag.
He had come with me because I'd asked him to.
"You don't need to stay for everything," I told him.
"I brought a book," he said.
I kissed his cheek without checking who was looking.
Then I went into the room where I had agreed to tell the truth.
The host welcomed me with both hands and a practiced sympathetic expression.
