Chapter 10: The Second Ledger
Itziar's POV
We took the ledger down to the abbot's room because there was nowhere else to spread it.
Gotzon laid it on the table and unwrapped the oilcloth with his old hands, and I stood beside Aitor with my coat buttoned wrong and my legs still unsteady from the tower.
It was a small book, narrow and dirty, bound in calfskin that had been wet and dried and wet again.
"I found it in the cistern house," Gotzon said.
"Two winters ago.
"A man left it behind in a sack, with a pair of wet boots.
"I did not know what it was.
"I read only the master's hand and my own, and I could not read this one.
"I kept it, because I kept everything, and last night I asked the cook's girl to read it to me, because her father taught her letters."
His long face was gray.
"I should have done it two winters ago.
"God forgive me.
"I was afraid of what it said."
"Read it," said Aitor.
"I cannot read it as it is written.
"The cook's girl read it to me, and I wrote it in my own hand on the back of the page."
He turned the book.
On the back of the first leaf, in Gotzon's crooked hand, was a list.
There were names, a year beside each, and a figure.
I read them one shape at a time, as I did, and I counted.
There were fourteen.
I read them aloud, slowly, a girl's first name and her age.
Fourteen, fifteen, seventeen.
Every one was a girl, and after each one was a sum in francs and a place across the border.
