Chapter 21: Thirty-Three Thousand Four Hundred
At nine on Monday the waiting room was full, and half of it was looking at me.
A woman in a green coat leaned toward her friend as soon as I unlocked the front door.
"That's her," she whispered. "The airport girl."
I smiled at her.
"Good morning. The doctor will see you in ten minutes."
Wes sat in the corner chair with a dental pamphlet open on his knee.
I had asked him to come and sit and say nothing, and he had said "Yes" and brought me a coffee.
The office phone had rung forty times since seven-thirty.
Strangers wanted to leave reviews, and strangers wanted to ask whether the unhinged woman still worked here.
The dentist had listened to three voicemails at eight o'clock and told me to put every caller on hold.
At five past nine, the bell over the door rang.
Lacey's mother came in first, in the cream jacket with the pin, carrying a long leather checkbook.
Lacey followed in a pale blue dress with no makeup, her eyes red.
She had chosen that look on purpose, and I knew it, and it still pulled at me.
"Nora," her mother said. "We will do this at your desk, where nobody can say it happened in private."
"That's fair."
She opened the checkbook on my counter and wrote with a fountain pen.
She tore the page out and set it beside my keyboard.
"Thirty-three thousand, four hundred dollars. The fourteen you fronted, and the florist's nineteen-four. That is every cent you say my daughter cost you."
