Chapter 14: First Night

He drove me home to Charlestown in silence, with the shoebox on my lap and the yellow card in my coat.

He did not ask what I was thinking.

I was grateful for it, and I wanted him to ask anyway.

At my door he cut the engine and sat with both hands on the wheel.

"I'll walk you in," he said. "And then I'll go."

"Don't."

"You're angry. I don't want to be the place you put it."

"I'm not putting it anywhere." I opened the car door. "I'm choosing, Mr. Maitland. You can follow or not."

I got out.

I heard him get out behind me.

The house was dark and empty, because my assistant took Sundays.

I put the shoebox on the hall table, very gently, and turned around, and he was right there with the door shut at his back.

"Tell me what you want," he said.

"You know what I want."

"I'd like to hear it."

"Fine." My voice shook, and I let it. "I want you in my bed. I want you to stop being careful. And I'd like you to start in the kitchen."

His eyes went black.

He crossed the hall in two strides and took my face in both hands.

His mouth was already open on mine, and I fisted my hands in his jacket and dragged him down.

He walked me backward into the kitchen, and I felt the edge of the counter hit the backs of my thighs.
