Chapter 4: Her Own Donor

The chief of emergency medicine is a tired man in his sixties who has not smiled at a resident since the nineties.

At six in the morning he was standing behind his desk with a printout in his hand.

"Sit down, Selwyn."

I sat.

"Gwendolyn Selwyn called the hospital's board chair at midnight," he said. "She says you misrepresented yourself to her family. She says you had inappropriate contact with a donor's guest. She wants a review of your standing in this program."

"Inappropriate contact," I said.

"The guest was Gabriel Maitland. Your patient's grandson. You spoke to him in bay four."

"I told him to wait in the waiting room," I said.

"That's what I assumed." He sat down heavily. "The Selwyn Foundation has pledged eleven million to the new trauma wing. You see my problem."

"I do," I said.

He turned the printout around and slid it across the desk.

"This arrived at four this morning. The donor wants to remain anonymous. Initials only: L.R."

I read it.

L.R. would double the Foundation's pledge to the trauma wing, from a separate source, effective immediately.

There was exactly one condition.

No resident in the program was to be moved, reviewed or removed for any reason other than clinical performance, for the life of the gift.

"I've been here thirty years," the chief said. "I have never seen a donor write that sentence. Do you know who L.R. is?"

I kept my face perfectly straight.

I had signed that letter on my phone at four, in the break room.

I had done it between a boy who had fallen off a ladder and a man who had swallowed a key.

"That's very generous of them," I said, which was true.

"It is." He studied me. "I don't know them either." He took the page back. "Whoever they are, they've just made a review of your standing a very expensive idea. Go home and sleep, Dr. Selwyn."

I did not go home.

I took a cab to Chestnut Street instead, because my two suitcases were in somebody else's hall.
