Chapter 23: Saturday Class

Caleb's POV

On Saturday morning I opened the garage at seven and found Eli Weatherford already sitting on the gravel with two coffees.

He held one out.

"I know I'm early," he said. "I didn't want to be the one who made you wait."

"Eight o'clock is the rule."

"I know."

"You can hold the mats."

"I'd like that."

He did not complain once.

For an hour he dragged the blue mats into rows and wiped them down. When the first kids arrived, he stood at the edge in a Foundation quarter-zip with the logo cut off the chest.

A nine-year-old in a dinosaur T-shirt looked him up and down.

"Are you the brother who picked the other one?"

Eli looked at the floor.

"Yes."

"That's dumb."

"I know."

"You can hold my towel."

"Thank you," Eli said, and took the towel, and I looked at the ceiling so I would not laugh.

At eight-fifteen a charcoal sedan pulled onto the gravel.

Clark got out in a suit, with a folder under his arm.

He walked up to the open door and stopped on the threshold, as his mother had.

"Mr. Devlin."

"Weatherford."

"I would like to make a contribution to the gym."

He opened the folder. I did not look inside.

"The interim board has withdrawn the eviction. I've drawn up a lease for you at no cost, in perpetuity, with an endowment for the roof."

"Is that a deal?"
