Chapter 7: The Hearing
The hearing room was on the second floor of the administration building, and it had a long table and a flag.
Three people sat behind the table.
The dean sat in the middle.
A woman from the conduct office sat on her left, and a professor of law sat on her right.
I sat alone on one side with my hands flat on my knees.
Behind me sat all eleven of my classmates, who had not been invited.
The baby was asleep on the boy in the back row's shoulder.
Caleb leaned against the wall by the door in his work jacket. He had come straight off a night shift and had not said a word about it.
On the other side of the room sat seven students from the honors program in a neat row.
Chloe was at the end of it, in a gray dress, with her hands in her lap.
Behind them in the last row, my mother sat in her cream blazer with her bag on her knee.
She had not looked at me once.
"We are here," the woman from the conduct office said, "to consider a complaint about the conduct of Talia Weatherford in the east parking lot on Tuesday evening."
She pressed a key on a laptop.
A screen on the wall lit up with the video.
It started with me already standing over the first man.
It showed me throwing him, and then the second one, and then the pipe.
It lasted about a minute, and it ended with the three of them on the ground.
"The complainants allege," the woman said, "that this shows a pattern of violence."
Chloe dabbed her eyes with a tissue.
"I only wanted her to get help," she said, in a small voice. "I'm not angry. I love my sister. I was afraid."
