Chapter 19: The Trial
"I'll be in the hall," Seren said. "You can watch me from the throne."
Aldric laughed, and had them take Corvus down to the cells.
They kept Seren chained to the hounds' ring all night, so the guards could see he was nothing.
At dawn the hall filled up behind him.
The eleven lords sat in their chairs.
Behind them, along the walls, stood the court: wives, clerks, officers, merchants with the right friends.
They'd brought Corvus up from the cells and stood him at the back between two guards, still in irons.
He'd found Seren with his eyes the moment he came in, and he hadn't looked anywhere else since.
Aldric stood at the council table in green and blue, with a bundle of papers tied in black ribbon.
He untied it slowly.
"The charge is treason," he said. "Written in the prisoner's own hand, over three years."
He didn't read them.
He dropped the bundle on the table in front of the lords, and it slid and spread.
"You all had copies," he said. "Every one of you. The clerks have the lists."
