Chapter 16: The Accord Council

"Peaches," Dagny said, reading over my shoulder. "She signed her own name. To a complaint. About her own cellar."

"She thinks she's still the help nobody looks at," I said.

My father folded the paper into his coat.

"Then we'll look at her," he said.

The Accord Council met on the fourth of December, in the old grange hall at the head of the valley.

All three packs came.

They filled the benches and stood along the walls and out the back doors into the snow.

The Council sat at a long table on the stage. Seven old people, wolves and humans, with seven glasses of water.

I sat in the front row with Josie asleep in a sling against my chest.

Dagny sat beside me with a wooden crate at her feet.

Ransom stood up first.

He looked thinner. His beard had grown out ragged, and his sheepskin coat was dirty at the cuffs.

He pointed at my father without looking at him.

"Last week they walked onto Blackfen land at two in the morning with rifles. They forced two of my elders onto the floor. They broke into a private home and carried off property that wasn't theirs."

"What property?" the oldest Council member asked.

The Renderer stood up beside him.

"My lanterns," she said. "Old bone. Family pieces. My grandmother's."

"And where are they now?"

"On that girl's sister's shelf," the Renderer said. "With the skulls."

Ransom turned and looked at me for the first time.

"Ask her," he said. "Ask her why a hunter family wants a pack's heirlooms on a shelf next to wolf skulls."

The Council looked at me.

I got up.

I handed Josie to my father, who held her close against his chest.

I walked up to the edge of the stage and set the Shrike family book down on the long table.
