Chapter 10: The Mark He Kept From Me

Lucien had a chair set for Aquas below the sealed war maps, the low one a servant sits in while being questioned, and Aquas dragged it across the obsidian floor to face his seat instead.

The sound stopped every conversation in the room.

Six clerks stood along the wall with their pens already wet.

A scribe sat at a stand with a page half written, and the heading on it was Aquas's name.

Lucien stood at the head of the table with his gloves on and his hands still.

He had not come to the library himself. He had sent a clerk with a seal.

Aquas took the back of the low chair and pulled it around the table.

The legs scraped the stone the whole way.

He set it down facing Lucien and sat in it.

'My lord,' one of the clerks said, 'that chair was placed for you there, by the maps.'

'I know where it was placed,' Aquas said.

He reached into his sleeve and set the Saturn signet on the table beside the sealed war records.

It landed flat and loud.

Two of the clerks looked at it, then at Lucien.

'Prince Carrion gave me that in front of the whole court,' Aquas said. 'He said it calls a witness hearing. I thought you should see it here, since this room is where you keep your records.'

Lucien looked at the signet for two breaths.

'You came alone,' he said. 'He did not.'

'You sent a clerk,' Aquas said. 'Not you. A clerk.'
