Chapter 31: The Courts Turn Their Faces
The temple gate stone was still smoking when the first foreign standards came through it.
Aquas turned from Lucien to face the rulers of Ethens walking into the hall where he had just burned.
Gold-white fractures were still splitting across the backs of his hands and up his throat.
Each one glowed brighter as his heartbeat pushed light through it.
Behind him, Lucien's shadow rose off the floor in a dark sheet and pressed back against the glare.
The two forces met a step behind Aquas's shoulders and held there, neither one giving.
Durn and the other dwarf captains were already on one knee by the eastern pillar.
Mossbeard and his goblin elders knelt across from them, heads down, beards brushing the charred stone.
Neither group had knelt for the Moon King.
Aquas looked at the rulers coming in, not at the light on his skin.
So this is what it does. It does not ask. It answers.
His chest was still tight, but his hands were steady.
'You asked to be heard,' Aquas said to the Moon King. 'Say it where every court can hear it.'
The King rose from the bench the guards had given him.
He straightened his collar first, the way he always did before he spoke.
