Chapter 22: A Stiff Hem

On Saturday my brother stood on the sideline in a hooded sweatshirt, holding a clipboard.

The Lions had a new quarterback in his number's place, a thin sophomore who threw like he was trying not to spill soup.

I sat in the student section next to Rhett, with a paper cup of cocoa warming my hands.

The coach held up the new play ring.

It had no colors on it.

Every card had a number and a shape, a circle, a square, a triangle, a star, printed black on plain white.

"That was Colby's idea," Rhett said. "He drew them himself. He came by the booth Thursday and asked me how to make them readable from forty yards."

"He did?"

"He asked me twice. He took notes."

Down on the grass, the backup flicked his eyes to the ring and called a play, and the offense lined up.

My brother stood behind the coach with his arms crossed, mouthing the numbers.

"He could start today," Rhett said. "The coach told him that. The coach said the new rings are good enough for him now."
