The officer led Dale Hutchins down the stairs with his case under her arm.
Patricia stayed in her chair.
No one sat near her anymore.
Graham stood up without looking at her and left the hall.
Douglas's new date whispered, "Should we go?"
He shook her off and followed his father.
I carried Finley out past Patricia.
She reached out as we passed and touched his ferry.
"That's a pretty boat," she said.
Finley pulled it against his chest.
"Grandpa made it. Not you."
Patricia took her hand back.
The week went fast.
Dale Hutchins was charged on Monday.
Patricia's lawyer said she'd been "confused and emotional."
Nobody in Lakehaven believed it.
The story of the toothbrush tube got out by Tuesday.
Three of Patricia's charity boards announced she was "stepping back."
