Chapter 21: Twelve Months

Doran's POV

The hearing room in Columbus had gray carpet, a flag and a long table with three people behind it.

I wore the one suit I owned, which had been my father's.

Hal sat in the second row in his church shirt.

Melina had asked to come, and I had asked her not to.

She had said fine, and then she'd parked the Honda across the street and sat in it for two hours.

I knew, because I could see the roof through the window.

"Mr. Danforth," the woman in the middle said. "The board has your complaint file, your notebook, and a letter from a lawyer representing Constance Hollin."

"Yes, ma'am."

"The letter says you accepted payments from her to conceal a patient's condition."

"That's true."

She looked at me over her glasses.

"You don't dispute it?"

"No."

"Counsel for the complainant says you were in her employ, and that you were bribed. She'd like the board to find that Mrs. Hollin misled you."

"Mrs. Hollin didn't mislead me." I kept my hands flat on the table. "She paid my mother's care home, and I let her."

"Mr. Danforth," the man on her left said, not unkindly. "You have an attorney available. This is the moment for him to say it was coercion."

"I'm not going to say that."

"Why not?"

"Because I walked past that woman at two in the morning, and I knew exactly what I was seeing. I wrote it in a notebook, and I put the notebook in a drawer."

The room was quiet.

"I was her nurse," I said. "My patient told me she couldn't walk, and I watched her walk, and I let her sister apologize to her for it every morning."
