Chapter 4: Locked In

Mom did not flinch.

She frowned at me as if I were the one who had done something wrong.

"What do you mean, your money? You live under my roof."

"Everything in this house belongs to the pack, and that means it belongs to your father and me."

"Your sister is the star of the banquet tonight. She needed something nice to wear."

Poppy's eyes filled with tears at once.

"Mom, you never told me it was Nessa's savings. I didn't know."

She fumbled at the clasp on her wrist.

"Here, Nessa, I'll take it off. I don't want you to hate me over jewelry."

She tugged at it, but she never actually opened the clasp.

Jasper stepped between us right on cue, shielding her.

"Nessa, stop being petty," he said, and sighed. He pulled out his phone. "It's thirty-eight hundred dollars. I'll transfer it to you tomorrow. Drop it."

Tomorrow.

He always said tomorrow, just like he had promised never to forget the mango.

I stared at him, and my voice came out hollow.

"That was my living money for the internship. I worked at the pack library for two years to save it."

Jared shoved past me and knocked my shoulder hard enough to make me stumble.

He put an arm around Poppy and glared down at me.

"I already told you I'd give you money for your internship," he said. "Why do you always have to play the victim and make Poppy feel like garbage?"

I looked at Jared, then at Jasper, then at Mom, who was busy wiping the tears off Poppy's cheeks.

"Give it back," I said.

The kitchen went silent.
