Chapter 18: The Open Door
Lacey's POV
I picked up the receipts after the bell over the door stopped ringing.
Two cashier's checks, five thousand dollars each, one to my mother and one to my father.
Crispin's signature was on both, the same block print as the note on Grandma's receipt.
I read them until the pharmacist told me my register was open.
I rang up three more people with the paper folded in my smock pocket, and I got every price wrong by a few cents.
When my shift ended at nine, I walked to Wyatt Street without my coat.
I told myself I was going to pack.
Maureen's door was shut, and light showed under it.
I went on up to the third floor and knocked on Crispin's door before I could change my mind.
He opened it in a gray T-shirt, with his hair standing up on one side.
He looked at my face and then past me at the empty landing.
"Come in," he said. "It's cold."
"I'm not staying."
"Okay."
I stepped inside and stood on the mat, and he shut the door and stayed by it.
The lamp with the green shade was on.
The brass key with the green cap still lay on the little table by the door, where I had left it.
"I read your receipts," I said.
"Okay."
"I'm going to a hearing in the morning that my parents asked for. After that I'm getting a studio. I'll take the account. I'll put it toward first month and the deposit."
I had made the speech up on the stairs.
I wanted to see which way his face would go.
He didn't flinch.
He went to the desk by the window, opened the drawer and took out the gray folder.
