Chapter 14: Nothing For Sale

Gianluca's POV

Renata stood at the foot of my father's table with a school letter in her hand and said what she wanted.

"My name," she said. "I want it said at this table by the person who stole it."

Lucrezia stared at her.

"Say it," Renata said. "Say that you are not Renata Ostuni."

It took Lucrezia three tries, and nobody helped her.

"I am not Renata," she said at last, barely above a whisper.

"Louder."

"I am not Renata Ostuni."

Renata nodded once.

"Next, I want the old ledgers opened," she said. "The ones my father sent in April. Anyone can read what I wrote in the margins."

Silvio's face lost its color.

"And last, I want nothing from this house," she said. "Not a room, not a ride, and not a favor. I start school in nine days, and I'll get there on my own money."

Silvio looked at her across the table and said nothing.

He had spent a week calling her a thief.

Now he was the one holding his watch.

"The ledgers will be opened in the morning," my father's accountant said, from the wall where he had been standing.

"Then we are done tonight," my father said. "Take them out."

The Don's men led the Ostunis out in a line.

Concetta went with her hand over her mouth, and the boy went with his head down.

Renata watched the door close.
